Large, industrialized cities generally have advanced organizational systems for sanitation, utilities, land distribution, housing, and transportation. Older cities often appear to be jumbled together, seemingly without a structural plan. This quality is a legacy of earlier unplanned or organic development, and is often perceived by today's tourists as being picturesque. Modern city planning has seen many different schemes for how a city should look. The most commonly seen pattern is the grid, favoured by the Romans, almost a rule in parts of the New World, and used for thousands of years in China. The Ancient Greeks often gave their settlements around the Mediterranean a grid plan. Classical city structure has frequently been copied and this process goes on. In the British Isles, classical cities include Edinburgh (the “Athens of the North”), Bath and Dublin. Another common model is a radial structure in which main roads converge on a central point, often the effect of successive growth over a long time with concentric traces of town walls and citadels, more recently supplemented by ring-roads that take traffic around the edge of a town. Many Dutch cities are structured this way: a central square surrounded by concentric canals. Every city expansion required a new circle of canals and town walls. In cities like Amsterdam and Haarlem, this pattern is still clearly visible – as it is also in Moscow. Towns and cities have a long history. Cities were formed as central places of trade. Ithaca, was portrayed as an island along the Ionian north western coastline of Greece, one of several islands that would have comprised the realm of Odysseus's family. The actual identities of the islands named in Homer's works are not certain. When Helen was abducted by Paris, Prince of Troy and son of King Priam, Helen’s husband, Menelaus, Ruler of the Lacedaemonians, called for help to retrieve her, thus setting the Trojan War in motion. Odysseus unsuccessfully tried to avoid going to Troy by pretending to be insane. Odysseus and other envoys of Agamemnon, brother of Menelaus, travelled to Scyros to recruit Achilles because of a prophecy that Troy could not be taken without him. Achilles' mother disguised the youth as a woman to hide him from the recruiters. An oracle had predicted that Achilles would either live a long, uneventful life or achieve everlasting glory while dying young. Odysseus cleverly discovered the trick and Achilles went to Troy, where he met his early death through an arrow in his heel. Just before the war began, Odysseus accompanied Menelaus and Palamedes in an attempt to negotiate Helen's peaceful return. Menelaus made unpersuasive emotional arguments, but Odysseus's arguments very nearly persuaded the Trojan court to hand Helen over. When the Achaean ships reached the beach of Troy, no one would jump ashore, since there was an oracle that the first Achaean to jump on Trojan soil would die. Odysseus tossed his shield on the shore and jumped on his shield. He was followed by Protesilaus, who jumped on Trojan soil and later became the first to die. Odysseus was one of the most influential Greek champions during the Trojan War. Along with Nestor and Idomeneus he was one of the most trusted advisers and counsellors to the Acheans. The Trojans believed that the Greeks had departed, leaving only this huge wooden horse which they decided to drag inside the city walls.
